Typically derived from the combustion of residual oil or coal tar oil, Carbon Black is a key ingredient in tyres (made of 15-20% carbon black by weight), providing compounds in the tyres with strength, improved tear resistance, and increased abrasion resistance. With a global production volume exceeding 15MT, it is expected to grow significantly from the surging consumption for automotive rubber parts and demand for high-performance premium automobile tyres.

Tyre industry recorded indeed more than 70% of the total carbon black consumption volume in 2019 and escalating rate of tyre replacements will continue to uphold carbon black sales in addition to the spiralling consumer demand for tyre pressure monitoring systems. Tyre radialization is also expected to create an attractive opportunity in the tyres category.

Moreover, sustained preference for carbon black as a colouring/pigmenting/reinforcing agent in paints and coatings, sealants, cables, wires, printing inks, batteries, and plastics is also expected to account for notable market growth during the period of forecast.

Driven by the challenges encountered the sustainable production of tyres, sustainable carbon black is becoming a key lever of innovation and differentiation in tyre industry. Several announces were made over the last few months to produce sustainable carbon black methane and/or biomethane or from end[1]of-life tyres.

This strategic intelligence bulletin focuses on carbon black: use, market, manufacturers, news, and the scientific.
